Scope
The project near Gatwick, transformed a 205-hectare site, including a former 60-hectare landfill, into a vibrant community including affordable homes, a primary school, retail and employment use, community facilities and green spaces with naturalized SuDS and a brook.
Approach
CampbellReith has provided the land quality, geotechnical, environmental and civil engineering consultancy services to facilitate the onward development of the landfill.
This has incorporated land assessments, remediation design, geotechnical treatment, civil engineering of roads and drainage and structural inputs to bridges. The remediation combined innovative techniques and adapted earthworks/surcharging strategies to manage ground stability and gas risk. The remediation has been guided by sustainable development principles, aligning with UN Sustainable Development Goals and the government’s Social Value commitments.

Outcome
Remediation works had been ongoing since 2015 and were completed in September2024, releasing the rest of the site for development. CampbellReith won the Brownfield Award 2024 Best Sustainable Brownfield/Urban Regeneration/Infrastructure Scheme for Kilnwood Vale.
