Scope

The Oak Cancer Centre provides new, modern clinical facilities for cancer research, diagnosis and treatment.

The new 11,700m² centre was constructed at The Royal Marsden’s Sutton site, replacing some of the more dated facilities and infrastructure with modern, purpose-built spaces, helping the Trust to save more lives by diagnosing cancer earlier. Bringing more than 400 of the world’s best clinical researchers together under one roof has accelerated the development of new treatments. The completed centre brings patient care to the heart of the research community, allowing the Trust to continue to make a national and global contribution to cancer research and treatment, so that more people are cured, and quality of life is improved for those living with cancer.

Approach

CampbellReith provided comprehensive structural, civil, land quality, and geotechnical engineering services for The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust's Oak Cancer Centre.

The project involved developing a new 11,700m² facility within a constrained 0.2-hectare site at the heart of the existing hospital. Our approach included extensive stakeholder engagement, particularly with the Trust’s estates team and clinical leads, to manage complex utility diversions and maintain uninterrupted hospital services.

We designed and oversaw delivery of enabling works, including the partial demolition of Orchard House and utility diversions, ensuring a prepared site for the main contractor. Following the RIBA Stage 4 design phase, our services were novated to the main contractor, where we continued to provide engineering support through construction to completion. Our meticulous planning and execution enabled the successful integration of modern infrastructure, enhancing cancer care and research capabilities.

Outcome

The Oak Cancer Centre successfully met its objectives. This 11,700m² facility replaced outdated infrastructure with modern spaces, enhancing cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Key Achievements:

  • Improved Patient Care: Centralised departments enable patients to access multiple services in one visit, improving convenience.

  • Advanced Diagnostics: Remote consultation rooms and a Rapid Diagnostic Centre on the lower ground floor use the latest technology for early cancer detection.

  • State-of-the-Art Treatment: The Medical Day Unit and Urgent Care Centre provide specialised, immediate care in modern environments.

  • Enhanced Research: Over 400 researchers are consolidated across three floors, fostering collaboration and accelerating new treatment development.

  • The Oak Cancer Centre has significantly enhanced patient outcomes and reinforced The Royal Marsden’s position as a leader in cancer care and research.
